Jami Attenberg, author of The Kept Man and Instant Love, has a new book coming out tomorrow called The Melting Season. I’ve never read anything by her before, but after reading the discription of this book, I wanted to. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reader copy to be able to write a review here for the The Girl from the Ghetto blog. I enjoyed The Melting Season very much; the book was dark, dysfunctional, and ended up nowhere near where I expected it to. Not that it was a surprise ending, I just expected the main character to go down a completely different path, that’s all. Now that I’ve read Ms. Attenberg’s latest book, I’ll be putting her other books on my Goodreads list. (You can find me under Nerd Girl Blogger there.) I like her alot, she’s my type of writer.
Catherine Madison, the main character of The Melting Season, has fled middle-of-nowhere Nebraska with a suitcase filled with $178,000 of her soon-to-be ex-husband’s money. She’s on the run, and the most natural place for her to run to is Las Vegas, of course. I fully expected Catherine to run into trouble in Vegas, and when she meets Valka, I kept thinking oh, no, here it comes. But the joining of these two women, one physically empty, one emotionally, somehow manages to allow them both to grow. Without saying too much else, because I don’t want to spoil the book for you, The Melting Season touches on everything from abuse, sex, dysfunctional relationships, family, friends and survival.
The Melting Season is a mesmerizing tale of dysfunction, damage, love and resurrection, propelled by a young woman whose survival is a marvel of the human spirit. I enjoyed reading this book, and I hope you all will consider putting it on your book lists and read it soon. Anyone who enjoys a dysfunctional tale as much as I do will need to purchase it immediately.
Watch this video blog, or Vlog as Jami calls it to hear what she has to say about The Melting Season. I can only hope she’ll be coming to Michigan on tour, as she mentioned visiting the midwest!
